Norfolk Chamber Music Festival
The 2023 season finale celebrates the tradition of choral music in the Music Shed with Mendelssohn’s choral cantata Hymn of Praise — a highlight of the Music Shed’s first concert in 1906. Yale Professor of Choral Music Jeffrey Douma leads the Litchfield County Choral Union, members of Yale choral ensembles, and regional singers accompanied by the Norfolk Festival Chamber Orchestra.
The Thirteen: Come With Me
Join The Thirteen as we explore Romantic ideals in music with composers from the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. At the heart of this concert is Samuel Barber’s Reincarnations, a lush setting of ancient Irish poetry which The Thirteen first performed in 2016. Also including Benjamin Britten’s end-of-life magnum opus Sacred and Profane, two of Brahms’ dramatic motets, a world premiere by British composer Ed Rex, and works by Bruckner, George Walker, and Caroline Shaw. This is a concert not to miss!
Yale Choral Artists: “Extra-Ordinary” Four Settings of the Mass Ordinary
“Extra-Ordinary” Four Settings of the Mass Ordinary
William Byrd: Mass for Four Voices (1592-93), with the Elm City Consort
Imogen Holst: Mass in A minor (1927)
Trevor Weston: Messe ancienne (2000)
Josef Rheinberger: Mass in E-flat major, Op. 109, "Cantus Missae"
New Muses in Concert
New Muses Project is delighted to present a program of hidden gems in choral and chamber music. The virtuosic and declamatory Psalm settings of Ulysses Kay and George Walker give way to Germaine Tailleferre’s richly sublime String Quartet, while Imogen Holst’s contemplative and expansive Psalm settings round off the first half. Hailstork’s Songs of Innocence captures the essence of childhood, a nostalgic escape from the bustle of everyday life.
This concert celebrates the launch of the New Muses Project web resource for the exploration of diverse composers. For more information, please visit newmusesproject.com.
